Sierra Club Endorses Gloria Mattera for Brooklyn Borough President
Brooklyn, NY -- October 25, 2005 -- In an historic move, the Sierra Club has endorsed Gloria Mattera,
the Green Party candidate for Brooklyn Borough President.
"I am delighted to receive the Sierra Club’s endorsement," Mattera said after receiving the news. "The
Sierra Club has taken a strong position against Bruce Ratner’s Atlantic Yards Project. I look forward to
working with the club’s Brooklyn activists to promote our shared vision of community control over
land use. Together, the Green Party and the Sierra Club will work to create a healthier, safer, greener
Brooklyn."
"The Sierra Club is proud to endorse Gloria Mattera for Brooklyn Borough President," said Ken Baer,
the NYC Group’s Political Chair. "Gloria Mattera represents all the values the Sierra Club stands for.
Gloria has devoted her campaign to sustainable development, addressing childhood asthma, expanding
mass transit, and is advocating for a citywide superfund law," Baer continued.
"Above all, Gloria Mattera wants to see the laws changed in this state so that proposals going through
public authorities, such as the Nets Arena/Atlantic Yards project, would be subject to the city’s ULURP
process," Baer concluded.
Mattera, a life-long Brooklyn native, lives in Park Slope with her family. She is an educator and health
care provider, currently working in the New York City public hospitals as a child life specialist.
Her campaign is nearing the $50,000 threshold for receiving $200,000 in city matching funds.
