Mattera Lauds Efforts of Cindy Sheehan and Bring Them Home Now Tour Links war on Iraq to lack of funding for local services
Brooklyn, NY -- September 19, 2005 -- "Cindy Sheehan is a true American hero," said
Mattera, Green Party candidate for Brooklyn Borough President, at a stop on the Bring
Them Home Now Tour in Brooklyn Sunday evening. "She has bravely called attention to
the threat of the war on Iraq to our most precious gift, our children. As a mother, my
heart goes out to Cindy and the many other parents who have lost their children as a
result of this war - in our country and abroad. I support the efforts of Cindy and the
other parents on the tour to ‘bring them home, take care of them when they get here,
and never let this happen again."
Mattera organized the event along with Rev. David Dyson and the tour organizers. The
program was held at the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Fort Greene and
speakers included members of Gold Star Families for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against
the War. More than 400 people attended the event, which included music by the
Lafayette Inspirational Ensemble.
"We are fighting those who choose to perpetrate a military war abroad and a social and
economic war at home," added Mattera, who is campaigning against Forest City Ratner’s
publicly subsidized development plan in Brooklyn which will displace many residents
through eminent domain. "Our children are being sacrificed for power and greed -- for oil
abroad and for real estate at home. Halliburton has moved in on Iraq and Bruce Ratner
is moving in on our Brooklyn neighborhoods. Meanwhile, basic needs for affordable housing,
quality schools and public transportation go unfunded."
Mattera will debate Theodore Alatsas, Marty Markowitz and Gary Popkin at the Fort
Greene Association Candidates’ Debate Monday night at 7:30 at the Lafayette Avenue
Presbyterian Church at 85 S. Oxford Street, Brooklyn, NY
