WHAT: Gloria Mattera's Borough President Campaign Brings Cindy Sheehan to
Brooklyn. Bereaved anti-war mother to speak at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian
Church. Bring Them Home Now Tour arrives this Sunday.
WHEN: Sunday, September 18, 2005 @ 8:00 PM
WHERE: Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, 85 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn, NY
Cindy Sheehan's son Casey was killed in Iraq. In August, she camped outside
President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, attracting international attention for her
protest against the war.
On Sunday, September 18, Sheehan will bring her story to Brooklyn. Gloria
Mattera’s Campaign for Brooklyn Borough President contacted Rev. Dyson and the
tour organizers in a successful effort to bring Sheehan to the historic Lafayette
Avenue Presbyterian Church, a place renowned for its social justice tradition since
the days of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
"We are pleased to give a warm Brooklyn welcome to Cindy Sheehan and speakers
from the Bring Them Home Now Tour," said Mattera. "Cindy is an inspiration. She
lost Casey, her son, in Iraq. But she's made sure that he will never be forgotten.
Her message reinforces what we're saying here in Brooklyn: War is a local
issue. Soldiers from Brooklyn have died, and the war has drained money from
vital local services. Military recruiters roam our schools looking for kids with few
options. This must be stopped; the war must be stopped; and the troops must be
brought home now."
Members of the Tour are speaking in cities across the United States as they travel
by bus from Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas to Washington, D.C. for the Sept. 24
United for Peace and Justice March and Rally to End the War on Iraq.
