Issues
Stop Ratner’s Land Grab
Forest City Ratner Corporation is seeking 1.6 billion in public subsidies to build an arena and 17 skyscrapers for private profit. The plan will jam Brooklyn with extra traffic and increase asthma rates. Gloria will continue the struggle to stop the Ratner sweetheart deal.
Preserve our Neighborhoods
Residents are being driven out of their homes to make way for more high rise luxury accommodations. Gloria will stand up for strong rent stabilization and defend public housing. She opposes the abuse of eminent domain, and she affirms our right to full community participation in all development and land use decisions as outlined in the city charter.
Keep Wal-Mart Out Of Brooklyn
There are 300,000 job-creating small businesses in our borough. Big box stores destroy small retailers and suppliers while wrecking our neighborhoods. Community groups and unions kept Wal-Mart out of Queens. Gloria will do the same in Brooklyn.
Education is a Human Right
City schools desperately need the billion of dollars ordered to them by state courts. Gloria will use her office to pressure the mayor and governor to provide adequate funding for our schools. She believes in free quality education from Headstart to CUNY. Gloria is committed to promoting more decision-making power for parents and teachers.
Make High Schools Recruitment-Free Zones
Our kids need job options, not military tours of Iraq. Military recruiters are allowed access to our children’s high school records. Gloria will promote parent’s right to remove their children from military recruiter’s lists.
A Sustainable Brooklyn
The use of oil and other fossil fuels is driving the war in Iraq and accelerating climate change. Gloria will encourage efficient and clean energy in Brooklyn— for our cars, homes, and everyday lives. She will implement sustainable “green building” standards for insulation and heating systems and will work to expand use of solar panels, wind turbines, and low pollution transportation solutions.
Enforce Worker’s Rights
Too many Brooklyn businesses exploit their employees and fire those who stand up for their rights. Gloria will promote voluntary recognition of unions, insist that employers respect minimum wage and other labor laws, and she will sponsor immigrant worker centers.
Defend Civil Rights
Since 9/11, thousands of New York City residents have been unjustly detained, deported, or interrogated by the federal government. Gloria will fight for all victimized residents, support same sex marriage and other rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community, and work to make Brooklyn a leader in the defense of reproductive choice.
Improve Brooklyn Transit
Quality public transit along with expansion of pedestrian malls and bike lanes will help reduce the harmful effects of vehicular traffic and our dependency on oil. Train service and staff cutbacks make traveling throughout our borough harder. Gloria supports improving and expanding mass transit and keeping all token booths staffed 24 hours a day.
