Biography
Gloria Mattera is currently co-chair of the Green Party of New York State, and was the Green Party candidate for City Council in District 39 in Brooklyn in 2001 and 2003. In 2003, she received 20% of the vote; the best three-way result for a Green in City Council history.
Gloria was born and raised in Brooklyn. She attended local public schools and a CUNY college. Gloria has a masters degree in special education and for the past 20 years has been working with children and families as a child life professional in the NYC hospitals. She lives on 2 St in Park Slope with her husband and children.
She opposed Bush’s military build up when others went along
with the costly rush to war — among them the same politicians
who today loudly lament the closure of fire houses and other cuts
in public services. After Sept 11, many immigrants were incarcerated
in Brooklyn without charges or were deported. Gloria threw her energy
into Justice For Detainees, and was a key organizer of the weekly
rallies at the MetropolitanDetention Center in Sunset Park.
Gloria was one of the main organizers of the well attended rally
outside the Prospect Park West home of Sen. Charles Schumer, an
uncritical supporter of the war on Iraq. She is also a member of
Brooklyn Parents for Peace and the Women’s International League
for Peace and Freedom.
